Pure Hoodia Gordonii
The first institute to have started a research for Pure Hoodia Gordonii, a cactus maturing in South African Kalahari Desert, was CSIR. The plant is considered by Kalahari tribes to be a hunger reducer. They have taken the cactus on log hunting trips to suppress appetite. CSIR defined the active component, called it 'P57' and assigned it a patent in 1997. In 1998 the rights for the plant were sold to a pharmaceutical firm in Britain, Phytopharm, which was expected to sell the product.
In a human research, processed by the company, '400 mg a day' of the miraculous Hoodia Gordonii for fifteen days decreased the intake of calories by 1000 in comparison with control group. The forms produced are capsules, pills, liquid and diet gum. To prevent patent violating, most organizations affirm that the remedy is a diet supplement, helping to lose weight.
Phytopharm unified with the US Pfizer, pharmaceutical remedies producer, to develop manufactured 'P57' and sell Hoodia Gordonii diet supplement. Among the organization selling Hoodia Gordonii capsules is 'Pure Hoodia', which possesses a certified trademark. They affirm that every pill includes '400 mg of Pure Hoodia', transported officially from South Africa and raised in private plantations. The offered dosage is 1-2 pills one hour before every food intake. Also they state that Hoodia is not a medicine and is absolutely safe to use as a weight loss supplement. An independent research came to a conclusion that Pure Hoodia pills don't contain 400 mg of active ingredient as stated by the organization, but fewer.
Because of the fact that Hoodia Gordonii cactus need 5-7 years to maturate, the amount of plants growing in the Kalahari desert is limited, and thus Hoodia Gordonii marketing is limited by 'CITES', that's why the consumers should be careful. Besides, an individual always has a possibility to experience some side effects because of Hoodia Gordonii interaction with other prescribed or non-prescribed medicines taken, as not all of them have been studied yet.
